A step by step guide to making your wreath.
1) Place your straw wreath base on a flat surface and tie one end of the reel of wire securely
to the wreath. You will be using this wire to attach all of your foliages to the wreath base so
don’t cut it until you have entirely finished your wreath.
3) Divide your foliages into a separate pile for each type of greenery.
2) Break down any large stems of foliage to make smaller branches about the length and
width of your hand.
3) Make about 10 small bunches using different stems from each pile so that each bunch has
a variety of greenery. The bunches should be about the size of your hand in width and length.
Bigger is fine but if you make your bunches too small your wreath will look mean.
4) Place one of the bunches in to the straw base where you have tied the wire and secure it
by pulling the wire over the twiggy ends of your bunch and up through the centre of the
wreath. Do this a couple of times until you are happy that the bunch is secure. Remember not
to cut the wire.
6) Take a second bunch of foliage and place it so that the top of that bunch covers the lower
stems of the previous bunch. Secure it with the wire in the same way that you did the first
bunch.
7) Continue overlapping each of your remaining bunches continuing around the wreath until
you get back to where you started. Do not cut the wire.
8) When all of your bunches are in place you can attach your decorations.
Push the wires of decorations such as orange slices and pine cones through the foliage and
into the straw base. If the wire starts to bend or scrunch up, try cutting it a little shorter, or
simply slide them between the thicker stems of your bunches making sure that they wires are
not visible. If your decorations have soft wire you can attach them by twisting the wire around one of the woody stems such as a piece of pine.
When you’ve finished attaching your decorations, go around the entire wreath with wire,
weaving it between the stems and tucking in any loose ends to make sure that everything is
secure. Don’t pull the wire too tightly when you’re doing this – you don’t want to strangle
your wreath! When you’re happy that everything is in place and secure, you can cut the wire and tie off at the back of the wreath.
8) Make a bow with your ribbon and attach it to either the top or bottom of your wreath using
the rectangular pin in your kit. Feed the pin through the back of your bow and push in to the
straw base.
9) Hang your wreath on your door using a wreath hanger or a piece of ribbon or string.
10) Spritz your wreath occasionally with cold water to keep it fresh.
Top Tips
If you are making your wreath more than a day or two after delivery, pop all of your foliages in
to a bowl of water and soak for about an hour to refresh them.
When placing your bunches lay each one in the same direction until you complete the circle.
Don’t change direction – it won’t look pretty.
For an even circle try to keep all of your bunches similar in size. If you want your wreath to
look a bit wilder vary the size of your bunches.
Gently tug the foliage around the inner edges to cover any visible bits of the straw base.
The straw base and foliage are all compostable so remember to pop them in the green waste
bin after Christmas.
