Getting the most from your wedding flowers

Flowers are expensive. This is a fact but there are ways to make the most of your budget by re-using and re-working your flowers from room to room.  With good design and a bit of inventiveness it is possible to make it seem like you have spent a lot more on your flowers than you actually have.

Pew ends, for example, can be such good value because it’s relatively easy to choose a design that can be re-worked after your ceremony to be used elsewhere in your venue.

I do this a lot, most recently at a wedding at Dulwich College where we re-worked all of the ceremony flowers to dress other rooms. The vases of flowers that we made as pew ends were used to line the grand stairway leading to the dining hall and the large mantle decorations were re-worked to dress the top dining table. All of this was done whilst the guests were having their pre-dinner drinks and were blissfully unaware of what was going on behind the scenes.

Moving flowers between rooms is easier to do if  you are getting married and having your reception at the same venue but if there is more than one venue involved it could be more difficult because it will reduce the amount of time that your florist has to transport the flowers and work their magic.

A good florist will be able to advise you how best to re-purpose your flowers. Some designs will work better than others but if you choose wisely, you could have the most amazing ceremony flowers that will work for you all day long.

Here are a few ways to re-purpose your wedding flowers

  • Put bridesmaids posies in vases to decorate the bar and bathrooms.
  • Move arches and moons from your ceremony room to frame a sweetheart table at dinner or use as a backdrop for guest photos.
  • Ask your florist to design your pew ends so that they can be easily turned into table decorations or used to dress a mantlepiece

I don't know how she did it but it's like she reached inside my head and enacted my exact vision of how I wanted our flowers...  I can't recommend Kay highly enough.

  • Bud vases can be given away as favours to your guests.
  • Use houseplants to decorate instead of flowers and take the plants home with you.

So, if you are planning your wedding and want to get the most out of your flowers be open and honest with your florist, tell them your budget and ask them how they can help you use your money wisely to have as many flowers as possible on your big day!
